Senior Secondary Physical Education

Course overview

In Australia, participating in and watching physical activity is culturally significant and deeply embedded in the national psyche. Physical activity is central to maintaining health, providing avenues for social interaction, developing self-worth and promoting community involvement.

Physical Education would interest students who are physically active, enjoy a range of sports; participate in sport as a coach, or who would like to further their knowledge of the physical culture of Australia. It provides a foundation for students who wish to pursue further study in human movement related fields such as:

  • Sport development, management, marketing, sales, sponsorship and fundraising
  • Sport and physical activity policy development
  • Sport journalism
  • Sport psychology and coaching
  • Athlete conditioning and management
  • Personal training
  • Primary, middle and senior school teaching.

Health

Course overview

The Health syllabus provides students with a contextualised strengths-based inquiry of the various determinants that create and promote lifelong health, learning and active citizenship. Drawing from the health, behavioural, social and physical sciences, the Health syllabus offers students an action, advocacy and evaluation-oriented curriculum. Embedded in Health is the Health inquiry model that provides the conceptual framework for this syllabus.

Year 10 Physical Education and Health

The Year 9 and 10 curriculum supports students to refine and apply strategies for maintaining a positive outlook and evaluating behavioural expectations in different leisure, social, movement and online situations. Students learn to critically analyse and apply health and physical activity information to devise and implement personalised plans for maintaining healthy and active habits. They also experience different roles that contribute to successful participation in physical activity, and propose strategies to support the development of preventive health practices that build and optimise community health and wellbeing.

In Years 9 and 10, students learn to apply more specialised movement skills and complex movement strategies and concepts in different movement environments. They also explore movement concepts and strategies to evaluate and refine their own and others' movement performances. Students analyse how participation in physical activity and sport influence an individual's identities, and explore the role participation plays in shaping cultures. The curriculum also provides opportunities for students to refine and consolidate personal and social skills in demonstrating leadership, teamwork and collaboration in a range of physical activities.

Students at Shailer Park SHS can elect to study Health and Physical Education Preparation classes. These classes teach the Australian Curriculum for Year 10 with a dedicated focus on the skills required of students in the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Curriculum. Students work to develop data analysis skills, evaluate claims and master subject specific terminology. These units form a strong foundation for Units 1 and 2.

Junior secondary

The curriculum for Years 7, 8 and 9 supports students to refine a range of specialised knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to their health, safety, wellbeing, and movement competence and confidence. Students develop specialised movement skills and understanding in a range of physical activity settings. They analyse how body control and coordination influence movement composition and performance and learn to transfer movement skills and concepts to a variety of physical activities. Students explore the role that games and sports, outdoor recreation, lifelong physical activities, and rhythmic and expressive movement activities play in shaping cultures and identities. They reflect on and refine personal and social skills as they participate in a range of physical activities.

Students work to develop and apply in simple contexts senior concepts including motor learning, biomechanics, ethics and equity, tactical awareness and fitness and training with a different physical activity focus each term.
