What does it do?

Your School Council works to help the school undertake projects that will have a school wide impact with one key goal in mind – improving the learning experience and environment for our students.

How does it do this?

The School Council:

  • Monitors the school's strategic direction.
  • Approves school plans and policies of a strategic nature, or other documents affecting strategic matters including the annual estimate of revenue and expenditure for the school.
  • Monitors the implementation of the plans, policies and other documents mentioned above.
  • Advises the school's Principal about strategic matters.

What can't it do?

The School Council must not:

  • Interfere with the management by the Principal of the day-to-day operations of the school and its curriculum.
  • Make operational decisions about the use of teaching and learning resources.
  • Make decisions about individual teaching styles.
  • Make decisions that are contrary to law or written polity of the Department.

What's the difference between the School Council and the P&C Association?

Some of the main differences are:

  • The general role of the School Council is to guide the broad strategic direction of the school – the general role of the P&C is to promote the interests of and facilitate the development and further improvement of the school by promoting parent participation and encouraging collaboration.
  • The School Council has no capacity to raise, borrow or invest money. The P&C has financial delegation to raise funds, borrow money and invest money.
  • The School Council cannot operate businesses. The P&C has the capacity to operate businesses (e.g. canteen, uniform shop etc.).
  • The School Council cannot employ staff.  The P&C may employ staff.

Further information on the School Council can be provided upon request.
